Mano Alves was born Manoel Alves dos Santos in 1940 in Piranhas, Alagoas, a rural town in northeastern Brazil. He grew up with the rhythms of forró and baião that were part of the region's musical traditions. In 1967, he signed with RCA Records and released his debut album "Mano Alves Canta," which brought him national attention.
His song "A Dona do Meu Coração" became a major hit in 1973 and remains his most recognized work. Other songs like "Bruxo Feiticeiro" and "Já Não Tenho Paz" continued in a similar vein, with lyrics that spoke plainly about love and rural life. His voice had a distinctive, unpolished quality that felt direct and unadorned.
The award recognized work that stayed close to the regional styles he'd drawn from since the beginning.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
