Mano Bigode formed in São Paulo in 1985 as a trio with Ricardo "Bigode" Machado on vocals and guitar, José "Zé" Picolin on bass, and Luiz "Binho" Calixto on drums. They started playing dive bars and underground clubs, building a following with their raw, energetic live shows.
Their debut album "Paranoia" came out in 1987, featuring the title track that became one of their most recognizable songs. The record had a distorted sound with Machado's desperate vocals that connected with disaffected listeners. They followed it with "A Queda do Império" in 1989 and "Nação Zumbi" in 1992.
Their music mixed psychedelic rock, punk, and Brazilian popular music, with lyrics that touched on social alienation and political themes. The band went on hiatus in the mid-1990s amid internal conflicts and drug use allegations.
