Márcio Poeta was born in Salvador, Bahia in 1963, where his father played guitar and the household was full of music. As a teenager he listened to troubadours and bossa nova, which shaped his approach to writing songs.
His debut album came out in 1990, simply titled 'Márcio Poeta.' It included 'Lua,' a song that became his most well-known work. The record also had 'Par Perfeito' on it. Some listeners found the lyrics in 'Lua' too direct or the mood too dark, but it caught the attention of critics and other musicians.
Roberta Miranda, Caetano Veloso, and Maria Bethânia have all covered his songs. He put out more albums after that first one, like 'Somente o Sol' in 1992, 'Rio Bossa' in 1997, and 'Intimidade' in 2001.
