Margaret Whiting was born in Detroit in 1924, the daughter of composer Richard Whiting and singer Margaret Young. She started singing professionally at 15 and signed with Capitol Records in 1942. Early recordings like 'Moonlight in Vermont' from 1945 showed her rich tone and phrasing.
Her father co-wrote 'A Wonderful Guy,' which became her signature song when it was released in 1949. Other songs from that period include 'Come Rain Or Come Shine,' 'I'll Walk Alone,' and 'A Tree In The Meadow.'
During the 1950s she worked in a vocal duo with Jo Stafford. They recorded together on songs like 'Como Si, Como No' in 1951 and 'The Things We Did Last Summer' the following year.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
