Mari Boine

Mari Boine was born in Kåfjord, Norway in 1956. Her mother was a yoiker, a traditional Sámi singer, and that connection to Sámi vocal traditions became central to her music. She started recording in the late 1980s, with songs like 'Gula Gula' appearing on her 1989 album of the same name.

Her work blends Sámi folk elements with contemporary sounds, though she's never been interested in pure preservation. The music feels like a conversation between old forms and current arrangements. 'Butterfly' shows how she can make traditional vocal techniques feel immediate and personal rather than archival.

Boine has been outspoken about Sámi rights and cultural issues, which has sometimes drawn criticism in Norway. She's released albums steadily over decades, including 'Eight Seasons' in 2007 and 'See the Woman' in 2017.
