Mari Hamada started as a vocalist for the Japanese metal band Loudness in the early 1980s. She left in 1985 to go solo, releasing her debut album 'Lunatic Doll' that same year. Her solo work moved away from Loudness's heavy sound toward something more melodic and pop-oriented.
In 1995, she put out 'Runaway From Yesterday,' which became one of her most recognizable songs. Other tracks like 'Another Way' and 'Ash And Blue' show the kind of melodic rock she settled into after leaving the band scene. She was born in Tokyo in 1962.
Her career had a rough patch in 1989 when she was arrested for drug possession, which led to some time away from music. She returned to recording and performing afterward, but that incident remains part of her story.
