Marianneke began as a duo in the early 1970s with vocalist Anita Meijer and her then-husband Peter Nieuwerf. Their debut single 'Mijn Bonmama' became an instant classic in the Netherlands, with its lyrics paying tribute to Meijer's grandmother.
After Nieuwerf left in 1978, Meijer continued as the sole vocalist and worked with various musicians including bassist Leo Driessen and guitarist Jan Akkerman. The band released over a dozen albums, with their first simply titled 'Marianneke' in 1973.
