Mariano e Cobrinha

Mariano e Cobrinha were a Brazilian duo who started performing as street musicians in Rio de Janeiro during the 1950s. Mariano Francisco dos Santos and José Francisco Neto sang together with what some described as a raw, unpolished quality that came from their humble beginnings.

In the mid-1960s, producer Roberto Menescal noticed them and signed the duo to his label. Their most famous recording came in 1968 with "Canção do Berço," a gentle lullaby that became widely known across Brazil. The song's simple melody and soothing rhythm made it popular with families.

Beyond that lullaby, they recorded other songs like "Mágoa de Carreiro" and "Meu Ranchinho" that reflected everyday Brazilian life. Their music drew from traditional rhythms with some bossa nova influence, though they had no formal training. Some critics questioned their approach while others appreciated its directness.

They continued recording together for years, maintaining a straightforward style that avoided elaborate production. Their songs often dealt with ordinary experiences rather than grand themes.
