In 1968, he released his debut album 'Samba, Bossa, Rock,' which included the song 'O Dono da Bola.' The track caught on with its catchy melody and lyrics about working-class struggles, and it became his signature piece. He followed it with albums like 'Mário Gomes' in 1970 and 'O Dono da Bola' in 1972.
Gomes was known for being outspoken about politics and inequality. In 1971, he was arrested during a protest and spent several months in jail. He kept writing songs that addressed poverty and repression, which earned him both supporters and critics. He worked with musicians like Alceu Maia on guitar and Wilson das Neves on pandeiro.
Another of his well-known songs is 'Você Voou.' His music from that period still gets played in Brazil, particularly 'O Dono da Bola,' which remains a familiar reference point.
