Mario Madureira came up playing guitar and singing in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. He put together a band under his own name in the 1980s, though it took a while for things to catch on.
In 1993, the song "O Espetáculo" changed that. It became a hit, and its lyrics, which took aim at what he saw as a shallow, materialistic society, started a lot of conversations in Brazil. The track remains one people know.
He's kept at it since, putting out albums like 'Em Busca do Sonho' in 1995 and 'A Volta' in 2015. Another song, "Tão Longe," is also among his better-known work.
