Mark Bernes

Mark Bernes was a Soviet singer who became known for his voice and his performance of wartime songs. He was born in 1911 in Nizhny Novgorod and started working as a stage actor and singer in the mid-1930s. His early musical interests included Gypsy ballads, folk songs, and some Western jazz and pop from that era.

In 1943, he released the song "Dark Night," with lyrics by Vladimir Agatov. The song became widely popular during World War II, capturing a sense of longing and sorrow that resonated with soldiers and civilians. Bernes's straightforward, heartfelt delivery of the song made it an enduring piece of Soviet wartime music.

After the war, Bernes continued performing and recording. He sometimes faced difficulties due to his views and associations, but he remained a familiar figure in Soviet culture. He died in 1969 at age 58.
