MARLENA formed in Madrid in 2015 around vocalist and songwriter Ana Fernández-Villaverde, with guitarist Julián Saldarriaga, bassist Juan Pedro Jiménez, and drummer Alberto Torres. They built a local following with energetic live shows before releasing their debut single 'Me Sabe Mal' in 2017. That song's catchy rhythm and Fernández-Villaverde's raw vocal delivery connected with listeners and led to their first album, 'Todo Va a Salir Bien,' the following year.
After the album's release, the band faced some criticism over certain lyrics that were read as having anti-feminist overtones. In 2020, Saldarriaga left the group for personal reasons, and MARLENA continued as a trio with Fernández-Villaverde, Jiménez, and Torres. They put out another album, 'Cuatro Estaciones,' in 2021, which included the track 'q te vaya bonito.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
