She signed with Blue Note Records in the late 1960s and worked with producer Bob Shad. Her song 'California Soul' came out in 1969 and became her best-known track. She also recorded 'Let's Wade In The Water' and 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' around that time.
Shaw made albums like 'The Spice of Life' in 1969, 'Marlena' in 1972, and 'Live at Montreux' in 1974. She sang soul and jazz material, and sometimes faced criticism for speaking about race and social issues.
