Marlene Ventramelis grew up in São Paulo, Brazil, in a musical family. She started singing and writing songs as a young girl, influenced by Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Brazilian singer Elis Regina.
Her debut album came out in 2005, titled 'Lampada Para Os Meus Pés.' The title track became a hit in Brazil, a ballad about finding hope when things are difficult. She followed it with several other albums over the next decade, including 'Incendiar' in 2007 and 'Entre Nós' in 2010.
Some of her songs have touched on social issues. In 2010, 'Mulher' sparked conversations about women's empowerment in Brazil. She also worked with rapper Emicida on a 2014 track called 'Máquina' that addressed social injustice.
