Marquinho do Banjo was born Marcos Vinícius da Silva in the Vila Isabel neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. He picked up the banjo early on, an instrument that would become central to his sound, and drew from samba, choro, and MPB traditions.
His big break came in the mid-1970s when he joined the samba school Estação Primeira de Mangueira. Around that time he wrote '1910, Burro Na Cabeça,' a song about the Canudos War that became his most recognizable work. Other tracks like 'A União Faz a Força Com Muita Energia' and 'O Encontro Das Águias No Templo de Momo' followed.
Marquinho recorded several albums through the 1970s and 1980s, including the self-titled 'Marquinho do Banjo' in 1975 and 'O Samba É Nosso' in 1982. He worked with artists like Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque, and Gal Costa.
