Martha and the Muffins formed in Toronto in 1977 around Martha Johnson and Mark Gane. Their debut album came out in 1980, and its single 'Echo Beach' became an international hit.
They released several albums in the early 1980s, including 'This Is the Ice Age' in 1981 and 'Danseparc' in 1983. The band's lineup changed over those years, with Jocelyne Lanois and later Ian Thomas on bass, and Andy Haas joining on keyboards in 1982.
Their music mixed pop with more experimental touches, and some of their lyrics drew attention for addressing social themes.
