Martha High was born in Washington, D.C. in 1947. She started singing in church and school choirs, then joined the group The Jewels in the mid-1960s, which put out some singles on Motown.
In 1968 she became the first female lead singer for The Impressions. With them she recorded "You Baby," which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. She left the group that same year.
After that she worked on her own material and toured, sometimes with other artists. She put out a solo album called The Magnificent Martha High in 1974.
