Martha & The Vandellas

Martha & The Vandellas started as the Del-Phis in Detroit in 1957, then changed their name in 1962 when Martha Reeves became the lead singer. They were part of Motown's early wave, with Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard singing background vocals. Their first hits came quickly, like 'Come and Get These Memories' and '(Love Is Like A) Heatwave,' which had a raw energy that felt different from some of the smoother Motown acts.

In 1965, they released 'Nowhere to Run,' a song that captured a kind of anxious, driving rhythm that became one of their most recognizable tracks. They also had 'My Baby Loves Me' and 'A Love Like Yours' around that time, songs that balanced romantic themes with a tougher vocal delivery from Reeves. The group's sound often leaned into a grittier, more urgent feel compared to some of their labelmates.

They faced some internal shifts and external pressures, including lineup changes and the competitive environment at Motown. Their music sometimes addressed social themes, though they kept recording through the late 1960s. The original trio of Reeves, Ashford, and Beard defined their core period, with later members coming in as things evolved.
