Archive material and source history

Martha Wash sang on the 1990 dance track "Carry On" with the group Black Box. That song became a global hit, reaching the top 10 in over twenty countries. Her voice had already been around for a while by then, starting in church choirs and gospel groups before joining the disco band Two Tons of Fun in the late 1970s.

She released a solo album in 1981 called "Martha Washington," which included the song "It's Raining Men." Her work with Black Box began in 1989 when she met the Italian producers Daniele Davoli and Mirko Limoni. They used her vocals on their debut album "Dreamland," though she wasn't initially credited for it, which led to a legal dispute over royalties that she eventually won.

After Black Box, Wash kept recording on her own and worked with other artists like RuPaul and C+C Music Factory. She also became known as an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and body positivity. Other songs in her catalog include "I've Got You," "I'm Not Coming Down," and "Free People."
