Marigold

The great migration west

On my mind like distant textbook I guess

And everybody gets to go

While I'm thinking here in a coffee shop in Chicago

Of the summer I was raised

Drinking beer not far from the steel mill haze

Flashed the marigold shades

We'd sit on the rocks and stare out at the waves

And talk about our fears

To sit around and wait for years

And man how great it would be to come back

If we just took off like some breezing Jack Kerouacs

Well the talking runs cheap

When the dharma bums are getting no sleep

Watchin out for daylight

like full moon cats jumpin from a dog bite

'Cause I never thought the sun could ever get cold

Or follow in my father's footsteps alone

And every good rebel would never get old

In that flash of marigold

We got blinded by the marigold

Stood on the railroad tracks

Like spark and heat of a ghost that never looks back

All good things I know

Are rushing through my heart when the whistle blows

And the sweet bitter pain

Of reminiscing youth like a speeding train

And the crash thunderbolt

Those days fly by in a spark of marigold
