Archive material and source history

Marty Wilde was born Reginald Leonard Smith in Southampton in 1939. He started playing music as a teenager, forming a band called the Wildcats and drawing inspiration from Elvis Presley and Tommy Steele. In 1959, producer Joe Meek noticed him and helped launch his career.

His first major hit came that same year with 'A Teenager In Love,' which topped the UK charts and made him a teen idol. He followed it with other songs like 'Abergavenny' and 'Bad Boy,' and his popularity spread through Europe and into the United States.

He kept performing and recording, but the peak of his chart success had passed by then.
