Background notes

Archive material and source history

Marty Wilde and the Wildcats were a British rock 'n' roll group active in the late 1950s. Marty Wilde, born Reginald Smith, formed the band with guitarist Ronnie Wycherley, bassist Brian Locking, and drummer Mick Nicholls. They started out as the Wildcats before Wilde's name was added.

Their 1959 single "Love Bug Crawl" became their most recognizable song. It had a rockabilly feel with some calypso rhythm mixed in, and Wilde delivered it with a distinctive vocal style that stood out on British radio at the time.

They had earlier success with a 1958 track called "Bad Boy." The band's energetic performances and Wilde's youthful look drew some criticism from commentators who found the music too rowdy, which was fairly common for rock 'n' roll acts in Britain then.

They recorded a number of singles and albums through the early 1960s. The lineup changed over time, and Wilde eventually pursued a solo career while continuing to perform with various musicians under the Wildcats name.
