Martyrd formed in the 1980s metal scene, reportedly in San Francisco. The original lineup included vocalist John Gallagher, guitarists Jamie Scott and Billy O'Connor, bassist Bobby Styles, and drummer Tony Sciuto. They built a following with live shows, but early recordings didn't break through commercially.
Their 1989 album 'Betrayal' changed things. The title track became something of an anthem, with Gallagher's vocals and Scott's guitar work driving its raw intensity. Songs like 'Blue & Black' and 'Casualties' from that period also found their audience. The album developed a cult status among metal listeners.
After 'Betrayal,' the lineup shifted. O'Connor left and was replaced by guitarist Steve Reynolds. Styles and Sciuto also departed later on.
