Background notes

Archive material and source history

Martyrs & Poets formed in the early 2000s with Ryan McNeely on vocals, Michael Kelley on guitar, Ben Ellis on bass, and James Anderson on drums. Their debut album 'A Thousand Cuts' came out in 2003, featuring the song 'Lullaby' that became a fan favorite. The record got some attention for its raw emotional tone and poetic lyrics.

McNeely's writing often dealt with religion, love, and loss, which drew both praise and criticism. Some listeners found the material too dark. The band also faced internal issues, with McNeely dealing with addiction and mental health problems. Ellis and Anderson eventually left, leaving McNeely and Kelley to continue as a duo.

They put out a second album called 'The Shape of Silence' in 2006. The song 'Replay' appears in their catalog alongside 'Lullaby'.
