Maru formed in Bogotá, Colombia in 2010, started by a few friends who wanted to make music together. The original lineup had Alejandro Peláez on vocals and piano, Juan Pablo Moreno on guitar, Sebastián Lizarazo on bass, and Juan Manuel Acosta on drums. They put out their first album in 2012, just called 'Maru'.
Their song 'Cafeína' became something of a signature track for them, and they followed it with albums like 'Todo Bien' in 2015 and 'Café de las Noches' in 2017. In 2015, Acosta left the band and Diego Chávez took over on drums. They've kept releasing music since, with '4:00 AM' in 2019 and 'Mariposas Amarillas' in 2022.
Peláez writes most of their material, and their sound pulls from pop and rock with some Latin rhythms mixed in. Other songs like 'Cielo' and 'Mientes' show their range, moving between more energetic tracks and quieter, more reflective ones.
