Archive material and source history
The Marvelettes started as the Casinyets in Inkster, Michigan in 1960, with Gladys Horton, Georgia Dobbins, Wanda Rogers, and Katherine Anderson. They caught Berry Gordy Jr.'s attention and signed with Motown the next year, changing their name. Their debut single 'Please Mr. Postman' went to number one in 1961.
They had other songs like 'Playboy' and 'Don't Mess with Bill' through the 1960s. Gladys Horton left in 1967. The group's relationship with Motown had some strain over contracts and payment.
