Massive formed in Bristol in 1991 with Robert Del Naja, Grant Marshall, and Andrew Vowles. Their early work blended hip-hop, dub, and techno in ways that didn't fit neatly into existing categories. The 1991 single 'Unfinished Sympathy' became a turning point, with its atmospheric production and emotional weight drawing attention beyond the dance floor.

Their albums like 'Blue Lines' (1991), 'Protection' (1994), and 'Mezzanine' (1998) developed that sound further, often incorporating collaborators like Tricky and Elizabeth Fraser. Songs like 'Full Throttle' and 'Burn The Sun' showed their ability to build tension and release it through layered production and driving rhythms.
