Editor's note

Matchbook Romance, the Long Island emo band

Their 2004 single 'Monsters' became an anthem for the mid-2000s emo scene.

If you want to hear what they were about, start with 'Monsters'. For something later, try 'Playing For Keeps'.

Matchbook Romance arrived right when that early-2000s emo sound was taking over. 'Monsters' from their debut album 'Stories' captured that moment perfectly, it's the kind of song people still shout along to. You can hear that same energy in later tracks like 'Playing For Keeps' and 'Cream Soda'.

They formed on Long Island in 2003 and released 'Stories' the next year. After their second album 'West End' in 2006, guitar player Ryan DePaolo and drummer Justin Sharkey left. Andrew Jordan and Aaron Stern kept going, putting out a third album called 'Voices' in 2009.
