Mateus do Acordeon formed in the 1980s around accordionist Mateus de Almeida Inácio from São José do Egito, Pernambuco. They built a following playing local festivities in northeastern Brazil, working in the forró tradition. In 1994, their song 'Vaqueiro Campeão' connected with audiences across the country, becoming an anthem for the region's cowboys.
The group's lineup has included Jorge Junior on electric guitar, Josivaldo dos Santos on triangle, and Edilson da Silva on zabumba. Their albums include 'Vaqueiro Campeão' from 1994, 'O Rei do Forró' in 1996, and 'Pé de Serra' in 1998. They recorded a live album in Fortaleza in 2004.
Some critics questioned whether their music commercialized forró or reflected outdated views, but the band maintained they were representing vaqueiro traditions. Their concerts continued to draw crowds in the years that followed.
