Matmatah

Matmatah formed in Brittany in 1995 with Tristan Nihouarn on vocals and guitar, Éric Digaire on guitar, Cédric Fort on keyboards, Jean-François Paillard on bass, and Fabrice Quémerd on drums. Their debut album 'La Ouache' came out in 1997 and included the single 'Emma,' which became widely popular in France. The band's sound mixed rock, reggae, and Celtic elements, and they released five studio albums through 2012, including 'Rebelote' in 2001, 'Archie Kramer' in 2004, and 'La Cerise' in 2007.

Their songs often dealt with social and political themes, which sometimes drew criticism. Tracks like 'La Fille Du Chat Noir' and 'Abonné Absent' carried that direct lyrical approach. The lineup changed over time, with Digaire leaving in 2005, but they kept recording and playing shows. Other songs like 'Alzheimer' and 'An Den Coz' showed their range from acoustic pieces to more experimental work.

They were known for energetic live performances that connected with audiences across France. While not always embraced by critics early on, their music found a steady following. The band's activity slowed after their 2012 anthology, but their earlier albums, especially the first one with 'Emma,' remain part of the French rock landscape from that period.
