A Salvador band that mixed samba, rock, and soul when that blend wasn't easy to pull off.
For a quick sense of their mix, 'Caminho da Luz' and 'Enquanto Estamos Aqui' hold up well. They frame what the band was doing.
Their 1975 debut 'Brilho Oculto' gave them a national hit with the title track, proving their fusion of Bahian rhythms with rock and soul could find an audience. Songs like 'Caminho da Luz' and 'Enquanto Estamos Aqui' carried that sound forward, sometimes weaving in social themes that drew notice during Brazil's military rule. They were playing small gigs for little money, but the music stuck.
Mato Seco formed in Salvador in the early 1970s around Paulinho Boca de Cantor, Baixinho, and Luiz Caldas. After 'Brilho Oculto' in 1975, they put out albums like 'Mato Seco' in 1977 and 'Mato Seco III' in 1979. Internal tensions led to Baixinho leaving in 1981, and the band stopped working together after that.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
