Matorrales formed in Granada in 1978 with Antonio "El Churro" García on vocals, Juan José Jiménez on guitar, Antonio "El Pulga" García on bass, and Luis "El Pájaro" Carmona on drums. Their sound mixed Andalusian flamenco with rock, jazz, and Latin rhythms, built around García's expressive voice and Jiménez's guitar work.
Their 1981 song "Assim Me Criei" became their most recognizable track, though they also recorded material like "Busca Vida," "Está Claro," and "Paz Além da Esquina." In 1984, their performance at a Madrid festival was interrupted by protesters who objected to lyrics they felt promoted violence, leading to a brief ban on their music.
They released several albums including "Assim Me Criei" (1981), "Agua de Luna" (1982), "Nuevos Horizontes" (1984), and a self-titled record in 1986. In 2005, they received the Premio Nacional de las Músicas Actuales.
