Background notes

Archive material and source history

Matozza was a Brazilian musical collective that formed in the early 1970s in Rio de Janeiro. The group included Ney Matogrosso on vocals, Beto Lee on guitar, Luiz Caldas on drums, and Lanny Gordin on bass. Their debut album 'Matozza I' came out in 1973, featuring the track 'Em Transe' which became particularly well-known.

Their music mixed rock, samba, and electronic elements, creating a sound that felt both raw and forward-looking for its time. The band's unconventional approach to performance and subject matter sometimes drew criticism during their active years.

Matozza released several albums through the 1970s, including 'Matozza II' in 1974 and 'Matozza III' in 1976, before disbanding in the early 1980s. The members went on to pursue individual projects after the group ended.
