Mats of State formed in the late 1990s when Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner, both students at UC Berkeley, started playing together. John Strohm joined on drums in 1999, and the trio began releasing EPs that caught some attention in indie circles. Their first full album, 'All Day,' came out in 2002 and included the track 'Maracas,' which became a live favorite with its offbeat lyrics about the instrument's appeal.
They signed with Lava Records in 2004, a move that didn't sit well with all their fans. That same year they put out 'Cruel Future,' followed by 'Reassemble' in 2006 and 'Mountain Battles' later on. Their shows were known for being a bit unhinged, with the band members dancing around and pulling the crowd into things.
