Mattafix

Mattafix formed in London in 2003 around singer and rapper Marlon Roudette and producer Preetesh Hirji. Their debut album 'Signs of a Struggle' came out in 2005, followed by 'Rhythm & Hymns' in 2007. The group's sound pulled from reggae, hip-hop, and soul, with Roudette's Jamaican background and Hirji's Indian heritage giving the music a particular texture.

Their track 'Big City Life' from that second album became their most recognizable song, an urban anthem that found listeners across Europe. Other songs like 'Living Darfur' and 'The Forgotten' showed their interest in social themes, though they kept things grounded in groove rather than polemic.

They released two more albums, 'Contradictions' in 2010 and 'Matrimony' in 2015. The band included bassist Jayme Laws and drummer Christian Madden alongside the core duo. Their music had a way of feeling both specific to London's mix and broadly accessible, which helped 'Big City Life' catch on in places like Germany and Austria.

After 'Matrimony,' things went quiet. There wasn't a dramatic breakup story or official announcement, just the gradual fade that happens with many projects. The songs, particularly 'Big City Life' and '11:30,' still pop up in playlists and memories of that mid-2000s moment when their blend of styles found its audience.
