Mauricio e Luciano

Mauricio e Luciano were a Brazilian duo who met in the mid-1990s. They started playing local bars and festivals, which is where their sound really took shape. Their 2002 song "Aôôô Butecooo" became a hit that captured the atmosphere of Brazilian neighborhood bars, what they call butecos. That track, along with others like "Arrocha" and "Movimento Louco," gave them a national audience.

Mauricio Gasparini sang lead and played guitar, while Luciano Lima handled backing vocals and guitar. They kept releasing albums through the mid-2000s, with titles that nodded to that bar culture they were associated with. Some critics felt they were commercializing working-class scenes, but their music kept finding listeners who connected with it.

Mauricio passed away in 2013. Luciano has continued making music on his own since then. Their songs, particularly "Aôôô Butecooo," still get played in those same kinds of places they sang about.
