Maurício Tizumba

Maurício Tizumba came up in Maputo, Mozambique, and got his start in the 1980s with the group Ghorwane. Their song 'Cinco Cantos de Moçambique' became a kind of national anthem, introducing many listeners to the country's music. He went solo in 1992, releasing albums like 'Nkata Mawe' and 'Mozambique' over the next decade and a half.

His music draws from traditional styles like marrabenta and batuque, and he's worked with other Mozambican artists such as Mingas and Stewart Sukuma. Songs like '14 de Novembro' and 'Balainho de Fulô' show his range, from political reflection to more celebratory rhythms. He's known for lyrics that touch on social issues, which has sometimes sparked debate at home.

Tizumba has performed with his band Grupo Mozambicano for years, maintaining a sound rooted in local traditions even as his music reached international audiences. He's recorded less in recent times, but songs like 'João Jiló' and 'Casa aberta' remain part of the country's musical landscape.
