Archive material and source history
Mauro Sérgio came from Niterói, a coastal city in Rio de Janeiro. He started out playing guitar and writing songs, drawing from bossa nova and samba. In the mid-1960s, he was part of the band Os Cariocas, where he worked as a vocalist and composer.
His solo career took off in 1967 with the release of "Chuva e Lágrimas (Rain And Tears)." The song's lyrics about heartbreak connected with listeners and became a hit in Brazil. Other songs from that period include "Não Vou Deixar de Amar," "Hoje Acordei Chorando," and "Serenata."
He kept writing, and his recordings featured musicians like bassist Luizão Maia, drummer Luís Carlos Vinhas, guitarist Toninho Horta, and keyboardist Arismar do Espírito Santo. Albums from those years include "Meus Momentos" in 1968, a self-titled record in 1970, "Um Homem Só" in 1973, and "Vento Norte" in 1978.
