Max Richter

Max Richter is a composer and pianist who works with classical forms, ambient textures, and electronic elements. His 2004 album 'On the Nature of Daylight' established a sound built around piano and strings that feels both spacious and emotionally direct. The title piece from that album, along with 'The Blue Notebooks,' are among his most recognized works.

He was born in Germany to British parents and studied classical music, drawing from composers like Bach and Debussy. That foundation informs his writing, but he often layers it with electronic production and atmospheric sound design. His pieces tend to unfold slowly, favoring mood and reflection over traditional development.

Richter has also created longer, conceptual works. His 2015 album 'Sleep' is an eight-hour composition intended to be heard overnight. He collaborated with sound designer Tom Dea on 'Infra' in 2016. His music appears regularly in films and television, where its contemplative quality fits narrative spaces that need room to breathe.
