Archive material and source history
Mayara Barros is a singer from Salvador, Bahia, who grew up with samba and axé music. She started performing locally before joining the Afro-Brazilian group Olodum in 2007, where she sang with them for several years.
In 2012, she went solo and released her debut album. The song 'Hoje Quem Sorriu Foi Eu' from that album became widely known in Brazil. Around 2016, there were some questions about the song's authorship, but she kept performing it.
Later on, she put out another album called 'Maré' in 2020. That record had a title track that dealt with social themes, showing a different side of her writing.
