Maysa Barreto

Maysa Barreto is a Brazilian singer and composer from Rio de Janeiro. She grew up in a musical family where both parents were musicians, and early exposure to samba, jazz, and classical music shaped her approach. In the early 2000s, she began working with established Brazilian musicians like pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano and saxophonist Leo Gandelman.

Her debut album came out in 2006, simply titled "Maysa." The lead single from that record was "Shining At Me," which became her breakout track internationally. Her music draws from Brazilian rhythms and jazz harmonies, and she has recorded both original material and interpretations of standards from the Great American Songbook.

At one point, she faced online harassment and body shaming from some media outlets. She responded by speaking publicly about body positivity and self-acceptance while continuing to focus on her work.
