MC Doni came up in Rio de Janeiro's Jacarezinho neighborhood, where he was born Donato Gomes in 1983. His breakout came in 2011 with the single "Te Amo Sem Compromisso (To Nem Aí)," a track that caught on quickly with its straightforward rhythm and direct lyrics.
His songs like "Rebola Sem Sentimento" and "Hoje É Bailão" follow a similar pattern, simple, driving beats with lyrics that don't overcomplicate things. He's worked with other Brazilian artists including Anitta and Ludmilla, but his own material tends to stick to a familiar, unadorned funk style.
Some of his music has drawn criticism for its content, though he hasn't shifted much from his approach. The albums he's put out, from 2012's "Eu Gosto É de Mulher" to 2018's "O Movimento," maintain that consistent, no-frills sound.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
