MC GL Gospel Funk started in Rio de Janeiro around 2008, putting gospel melodies and funk beats together. Their song 'Passinho do Varão' came out in 2015 and got picked up as a dance track for the passinho style that was happening in Brazil at the time.
Some people in both gospel and funk circles weren't sure about mixing the two sounds. The group kept going anyway, with MC GL on vocals, DJ 2K on turntables, Bruno M on bass, and Flávio Medeiros on drums. They put out a few more songs like 'Não Para de Dançar' in 2017 and 'Suavemente' in 2019.
They played shows outside Brazil too, in Europe, Asia, and the United States. The music stayed mostly about putting a positive, danceable spin on things without getting too deep into either pure gospel preaching or straight party funk.
