MC Japão is a Brazilian funk band that started in São Paulo in the late 1990s. The original lineup included Felipe Augusto on vocals, Marcelo Alves as DJ and producer, Danilo Vitor Gonçalves on bass, Jurandir dos Santos on drums, and Rodrigo da Silva on percussion.
Their 1999 track "Desculpa" became something of an anthem, originally circulating as "Funk da Coroa." Other songs like "Bumbum de Metralhadora" and "Agora Eu Sou Mais Eu" kept their name in rotation. They released albums steadily through the 2000s, including O Bonde do Japonês in 2000 and Xeque-Mate in 2002.
Their lyrics often dealt with street life and social issues, which drew criticism from some quarters but also connected with many listeners in Brazil's funk scene.
