Mc Jay James came out of Rio de Janeiro's favelas with a sound that mixed funk and carioca rhythms. Their track 'Baile Na Moral' became something of an anthem in those neighborhoods, speaking to the daily realities there. In 2018 they put out a debut album called 'Favelado Real' that caught on quickly.
They've had their share of trouble with authorities. In 2019 a concert was canceled after local officials claimed their music promoted violence, which stirred up a fair bit of support from fans. The group includes MC Jay and MC James on vocals, with DG handling production and DJ Batata and Tico on percussion. Another song, 'Nunca Vou Abrir Mão Desse Amor', shows a different side of their work.
