MC Jean L was born Jean Luiz da Silva in Rio de Janeiro. In 1995, he released his debut album 'Tás Preparada?', which included the song of the same name. That track became a hit in Brazil, connecting with listeners through its direct lyrics about poverty and social conditions.
He recorded several more albums through the late 1990s, including 'O Meu Tempo' in 1996 and 'O Julgamento' the following year. His music often featured DJs Cid and Mad, along with drummer Anderson Jesus and bassist Celso.
In June 1999, Jean L was shot and killed outside a nightclub in Rio. He was 24 years old.
