MC Lopes SP was a Brazilian funk artist who came up in Rio de Janeiro's Rocinha favela. He started as a breakdancer in the late 1980s before moving into rapping in the early 1990s, eventually forming the group Furacão 2000 with other residents from the neighborhood.
His solo single 'Minha Caminhada' came out in 2002 and became a national hit. The song's success brought him wider recognition, though his lyrics and stage presence also drew criticism from various quarters.
In 2006, Lopes was arrested on drug trafficking charges, which were later dropped. He also dealt with addiction and depression during his life.
