MC Martins, born Irlinho Martins, came from the Vila Alice neighborhood in São Paulo. He started making music with his friend Buchecha, and in 1996 their song 'Se Solta' became a hit in Brazilian funk circles.
In 2005, Martins was arrested on drug trafficking charges and served four years in prison. After his release, he returned to music but didn't regain his earlier level of popularity.
He recorded five studio albums and worked with artists including Xuxa, Belo, and Péricles. The group consisted of Irlinho Martins and Buchecha, whose real name was Claudinho de Oliveira.
