MC Tartaruga came up in Rio de Janeiro's favelas in the early 2000s, performing on the streets with a mix of funk carioca and hip-hop. The group was led by MC João Vitor, and they built a following locally before things changed in 2007. That year they put out "Bala de AK," a track that caught on with its direct portrayal of favela life and became a major hit.
The song's blunt language and themes drew some criticism, but it connected with many listeners and made the group widely known. Other songs like "Mensageiro da Verdade" and "Paz Justiça e Liberdade" followed. The group's lineup has included MC Menor da VG, MC Guimê, and MC Kadu alongside João Vitor, and they released albums like "O Trem dos Malandros" in 2008 and "A Vida É um Sopro" in 2011.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
