MC Tuto came up in the Complexo do Alemão favela in Rio de Janeiro. His music drew from Brazilian funk and samba, and he started writing lyrics about life in those neighborhoods when he was young.
His track 'Deixa Nois Viver Em Paz' became well-known, speaking directly about police violence and the desire for peace. The lyrics in his songs sometimes drew criticism for being explicit or for how they portrayed the realities of favela life.
He performed with a group called Tuto e Banda, which included DJ Guga on beats and MC Poze and MC PK on backing vocals. His music was often discussed as giving a voice to experiences that weren't widely heard elsewhere.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
